Construction Management
Scope of Work:
The elegant new facility is the gateway to the botanical gardens and utilizes sustainable environmental designs to highlight the local geography.
This state-of-the-art facility provides a barrier free route from the existing RBG Centre to the botanical gardens around the perimeter of a new multipurpose hall located in the centre of the atrium.
Construction of a 3-Level atrium facility with exposed systems of concrete, structural steel, timber decking, glazed walls and roof, with finishes of natural concrete, polish concrete floors, millwork, steel, masonry and stonework.
Major Accomplishments:
LEED Project – Targeted LEED Gold Certification.
Sophisticated Living Walls integrated with the HVAC system as an air quality filtration system and also providing a show-piece of natural plantings for visitors within the RBG facility.
Highly efficient radiant in-floor heating system weaved through heavily reinforced suspended concrete slabs.
Salvage of Queenston Limestone from the existing fountain court and re-use as finish stone inside the facility.
Non-toxic finish products including green seal paints and adhesives, formaldehyde-free millwork, and low VOC products.
Rain water management system which collects rain water run-off for irrigation and grey water use in the facility.
Low voltage lighting control and shades control system communicated through the building automation system which save electrical energy by utilizing daylight sensors to maximize daylight as primary mode of lighting. Caisson shoring wall to stabilize the existing building and accommodate deep excavation and construction at addition.
Complex steel and concrete structure with a glazed roof supported on a framework of compression and tension structural members making the roof assembly as transparent and light as possible.
All construction completed within close proximity to daily activities of RBG without interruptions to ongoing operations.
A high degree of multi-trade co-ordination through sequencing and phasing of all work was required, as the design was developed upon the premise that the structure and building envelope is the finished product.
